Rising Stars Indigenous Education Series is a collection of interactive cultural workshops facilitated by our Indigenous partners and staff. We offer a unique collection of Indigenous awareness & empowerment activities, workshops, and special events, through a engaging framework for student participation and learning. In the process of their active participation, students will develop pride, understanding, and awareness of Indigenous history, cultures, traditions, and achievements.

Journey of Discovery – On ReserveMCFN Community Trails

CREE CULTURES & CONNECTIONS

This interactive workshop will engage students in the cultural art and craft of making dream catchers, while exploring Cree culture and history from the perspective of the daughter of a Residential School Survivor, and an active Band Member from the Cree Nation of Waswanipi. Traditional knowledge is important to the vibrancy of Indigenous cultures. Although to non-indigenous people, making traditional items may seem like a simple production of handicrafts, these traditional activities have complex meanings and cultural significance. According to Eeyou Elders, ‘maamaahtaaukaschihtaau’ is an important concept in the positive continuance of culture and heritage. (Aanischaaukamikw Cree Culture Institute. 2011).

THE ‘NEW’ CREDIT

This interactive workshop will begin by dispelling some common myths and stereotypes about Indigenous people, and introduce students to Anishinaabeemowin, through the personal journey of a 5th generation New Credit band member in his quest for cultural connection and basic language acquisition. Students will be actively engaged in the historical journey of the Mississauga’s 1847 relocation to New Credit through authentic resources that will assist students in their more accurate geographic understanding of local Anishinaabee Nations, while increasing awareness about the process of related treaties and land claims.

LIFE SKILLS THROUGH INDIGENOUS GAMES

Life Skills Through Indigenous Games is a unique workshop designed to raise awareness about indigenous cultures through the promotion of healthy active living, and the creative integration of traditional Indigenous games and activities. Students participate and have fun, while developing physical literacy, and enhancing knowledge & understanding of First Nation, Metis & Inuit cultures.

INDIGENOUS ARCHITECTURE

The workshop begins by taking students on a journey, ‘Beyond Geography’, creatively sharing the geopolitical foundations for the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and demonstrating the significance of the Great Law of Peace (Kaianere’ko:wa). Through a unique series of interactive challenges and activities, students will come to appreciate the spirit of togetherness, understand why the League of Five (Later Six) Nations called themselves the ‘people of the longhouse’, and

LACROSSE CULTURES & CONNECTIONS

This active workshop is designed to raise awareness about the Indigenous origins of the sport of Lacrosse, while exploring the history of this Native American tradition that has become an international sport. Through respectful explorations, and the creative integration of lacrosse skills and drills, students will develop pride, understanding and awareness of Indigenous cultures, traditions, contributions and achievements in and through what was originally called ‘The Creator’s Game’.

ACTIVE CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

The Ontario curriculum states the importance of students connecting to the curriculum; to see themselves in what is taught, how it is taught, and how it applies to the world at large. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, 2019. The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1–8 – Revised. With this in mind, this workshop will engage primary students (grades 1-3), in an experiential learning opportunity designed to raise awareness about Indigenous perspectives, through promoting the respectful blending of Indigenous world views with conventional approaches to Physical Education. The primary focus will be in facilitating active participation and fun, while developing foundational movement skills and enhancing knowledge and understanding of First Nation, Metis & Inuit cultures.

CULTURAL SAFETY AND SPIRITUAL CARE

This workshop will effectively introduce students to the Indigenous worldview of socialemotional well-being. Through sharing her personal journey of discovering and embracing her Ojibway and Oneida roots, the facilitator will apply a social work lens, and explore the concepts of spiritual care and cultural safety as the necessary paths to overcoming intergenerational trauma, while building bridges through shared experiences and nurturing connections on the road to well-being.

BEYOND THE ROOTS

This workshop offers an authentic experiential learning opportunity. The facilitator, a certified Indigenous Recreational Therapist and MCFN Band Member, will bring students on a journey of self- discovery, through blending Indigenous world views and conventional learning opportunities, within an Anishinabee framework. This workshop will encourage growth through creatively bridging youth’s connection to self, peers, community, and the environment.

In recognition of the goals and objectives as set out in Ontario’s Indigenous Education Strategy, and the on going commitment of schools boards to provide valuable opportunities for learning, development, and support of all students, we are delighted to share our plans and progress in regards to the launch of another innovative program opportunity that promises to raise awareness about First Nation, Métis, and Inuit peoples’ cultures, histories, perspectives and contributions, while building healthy, caring, and inclusive school communities in the process.

LAND BASED LEARING EXPERIENCE

PART I – MISSISSAUGA OF THE CREDIT FIRST NATION (MCFN)

This land based learning experience and excursion is centered in the teachings of RESPECT, WISDOM, TRUTH, HUMILITY, LOVE, HONESTY and BRAVERY. These teachings, incorporated within the medicine wheel, are also found to exist throughout any Indigenous cultures of the world. With this in mind and heart, a team of MCFN community members will take students on a journey of discovery, on reserve, allowing participants to explore MCFN through sharing of local knowledge keepers, and teachings from authentic resources. Next, under the guidance of a certified Indigenous Recreational Therapist, students will come to understand Indigenous connections to the land, while traversing MCFN’s coveted community nature trails. We believe that this experience will contribute to the establishment of confident foundations which will serve to allow students to be more aware of Indigenous perspectives and cultures, while also encouraging the consideration of the true value of environment through responsible
actions and decisions.

Our primary objective is to provide meaningful workshop opportunities for students to explore contemporary indigenous life, while recognizing the past, increasing knowledge and understanding around the present, and making meaningful connections while looking forward to the future, together, with new found awareness and essential connections.

As a Regional Director with Rising Stars, Matt coordinates and facilitates various programs across both our athletics and education divisions. He currently serves as the Director of Rising Stars Basketball Academy Six Nations.

Matt King grew up as an all star athlete. He played NAIG for Team Ontario, and represented Ontario at National Aboriginal basketball camp, where he was selected MVP. Matt competed as a varsity athlete for the Mens Basketball Team at Laurier and Lakehead Universities, and went on to coach U Sport at both Lakehead and Guelph. Matt continued his education and began a professional career as a certified teacher. After ten years of dedicated service as a teacher, coach and Athletic Director (Chair) with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, Matt embarked on a new professional adventure, while continuing to compete in triathlons and Iron-Man races. As a Regional Director with Rising Stars, Matt coordinates and facilitates various programs across both our athletics and education divisions. Matt specializes in facilitating programs and instruction for youth, students, and athletes, both on and off reserve. He currently serves as the Director of Rising Stars Basketball Academy – Six Nations.

As an Associate Director at Rising Stars, Dee coordinates programs both in the athletics and education divisions in support of youth, students, and athletes, both on and off reserves.

Delicia Channer competed as a varsity athlete for Laurier University Women’s Basketball Team, where she was the team captain and a division all star. Dee continued her education and began a professional career as a certified teacher. Dee now serves as an Associate Director with Rising Stars. She is a LEAD Facilitator for Indigenous projects, programs, and services. In this role, Dee facilities creative programs and workshops that promote Indigenous awareness and empowerment. As Rising Stars most Senior Programs Instructor & Facilitator, Dee coordinates programs in both the athletics and education divisions. Dee specializes in facilitating programs and instruction for youth, students, and athletes, both on and off reserve. She currently serves as the Head Coach for the Conestoga College Women’s Basketball team.

ERIN FORMAN

As the Senior Vice President at Rising Stars Athletics & Education, Erin serves as the General Manager of the Education Division. Erin facilitates Advanced Programs and Instruction for administrators, coaches, and teachers. Erin develops and designs programs and curriculum for student engagement and athlete development.

Erin Forman is former member of both Softball Canada’s National team program and Baseball Canada’s National Team. She played in the 2004 Women’s World Series in Japan, and the 2006 World Cup in Taipei. Erin was named All American, All Conference, and Player of the Year, while playing on a U.S. Softball Scholarship. She was recently  inducted into the hall of fame for her achievements in sport. Though Erin’s sport specific bio clearly demonstrates an extensive combination of all around athleticism and personal achievement in softball that very few athletes can claim, equally impressive is her continued commitment to helping others achieve their goals through sport and education in her professional endeavours. Erin serves as role model in her trade and community. She demonstrates an unwavering commitment to making positive differences in the lives of others.

Erin continues to use sport as a vehicle to empower others in the work she does in coaching, and also in her professional endeavours. As a founding partner and Director of Softball Development at Rising Stars, Erin has become one of the most highly sought teachers and coaches of the game. Erin is on the cutting edge of instructional techniques, tools, and theories for optimal development. She has worked with countless local and regional athletes, supporting aspiring student-athletes as they continue in their positive development and successfully pursue opportunities to play college or university ball in Canada, and/or secure U.S. softball scholarships, with many advancing to become provincial and national calibre softball players.

DR. ANDREW PETERS

As the original Founding Partner of what would eventually become the Rising Stars Group of companies, Dr Peters has been instrumental in the continued expansion and reach of positive sport, youth, and community development programs and special projects.

From early beginnings as a competitive student athlete in the Hamilton region, and many local achievements and recognitions at the secondary level, Dr Peters went on to compete as a varsity athlete for McMaster University, winning numerous regional, provincial and national medals as a member of the Men’s Basketball Team. Dr Peters earned both a B.A., and M.A. at McMaster University, and went on to acquire a teaching certificate from D’Youville College, and a Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario. These formative years laid the foundation for what would eventually become Rising Stars Athletics and Education.

He continues to serve as the conglomerate’s most senior executive, with 25 years of success in youth and community development through athletics and education. He continues to leverage his passion and extensive experience to engage youth and community in a positive and healthy development.

Dr. Peters devotes his time and energy to creating and partnering with stakeholders in the facilitation of innovative student and athlete development programs. Through strategic partnerships with national, professional, and elite athletes, coaches, sport science professionals, and educators, Dr Peters continues to collaborate with local organizations and expand through offering a variety of programs designed specifically for the benefit of athletes, students, schools, and communities.
